Prelude
“Daelun!” An image appeared in Kari’s mind, she could see a fading face, his eyes bright. Her heart was pounding and her hands shaking. She leaned against the log she woke up by and started crying, she had lost her memory. The emptiness felt hot and burning, everything was painful to think of of look at. Throbbing headache prevented Kari from falling asleep again. Her mind wandered back to the face. She twisted her head in every direction to see where she was. But where was she? Daelun, who is Daelun? She just said it but who is it? Was it a father, brother, friend, boyfriend? Nothing was making sense. There is nothing to remember or make sense of. She rubbed her head, her temples were throbbing and her face was wet with a mix of tears and sweat. There were cuts on her knuckles and bruises on her arms. As she rubbed her head she felt something in her hand, a note. She was not interested and put it in her pocket. A lump formed in her throat and a stone fell in her stomach. Loneliness filled the air and the sorrow she felt for someone disappeared. A shadow floated over the trees in front of her. A figure made of smoke appeared out of the darkness. He was walking or floating then turned to her.
“Well look who showed up.” The voice was dark and raspy, evil in the tone and made her quiver. The figure drew nearer and nearer. All she could do was back up, but the log was in her way. His hand was outstretched and inches from her face. His hands touched her chin and then her eyes, she felt sleepy and her eyes dropped and everything went black. The last thing she heard was the man laughing the most horrible laugh and say,
“He won’t be there to save you this time…”
Chapter 1
Everything was cold, nothing was familiar, nothing was comforting. The feeling of eyes watching you when your back is turned engulfed her. The trees took the shapes of claws and hands full of wrinkles and knots coming to grab you. Kari sat on an old rotting log that was in a small clearing in what looked like dense woods. She didn’t remember anything, not until the moment she woke at least. There was one memory, one that was burning in her mind. One that was longing to be remembered. Shutting her eyes tight she looked back and pulled only a few snippets of the scene. Light, bright white light. Screams and yells. Torture. She only saw one face, a boy. He was not clear but his eyes were. They were electric. The color was lost in the blur of the memory . Kari opened her eyes and felt like she had a connection with this person. The way he looked at her, it made her feel like she had a purpose to fulfil.
A new gust of cold wind blew through the woods and sent shivers down Kari’s spine. Her senses were much more aware in the dark. Kari sat on the log fiddling with her necklace. It was too dark to make out what was on the charm but it did give off a warm glow of gold. A twig snapped in front of her. Her hands went to the log, feeling for a stick. Another twig snapped in the same place and leaves started to rustle. Her heart beating fast she looked down for anything to defend herself with. Nothing.
You would think in the woods there would be sticks she thought. Kari didn’t take here eyes off the area the noise came from. The snapping became louder and more frequent. With every loud step it took nearer to her the more her heart beat bounced. snap...snap...snap. She looked away grabbing a stick she found and felt another cold rush of air blow through and something touch her from behind. SHe screamed. Kari flew herself around and grabbed the thing that touched her. It was a long hanging branch from the tree above her. She gave a slight chuckle to herself.
Scared over a branch…
Kari turned around to walk back to the log when she heard another snap. Her heart went back to the fast paced beating and she gripped the stick even harder. Took a deep breath in and turned back around. She expected to see something attacking her but there was nothing. The black abyss of the distant trees and the eerie silence . Her soft short breaths echoed off the trees and then drifted off with the wind. Kari’s eyes were drooping, her mind was going fuzzy and all she could think about was a warm bed. As she sat down with her back to the log she put her hands in her pockets. She pulled from her left pocket a small piece of weathered paper. She completely forgot the aching feeling for sleep as she opened the folded paper. The words were scratched like they were in a hurry to write it.
“Don’t forget…” She said aloud. She hadn’t spoken till now and hearing her voice was strange like it didn’t belong to her. Her eyes were sticky and heavy, she laid her head down on the log and closed her eyes. A twig snapped only a few feet from her. She still had the stick in her hand and she sat up.
She put her legs to her chest and sat on the dirt with her back to the log. She looked down at herself, she played with the laces on her ankle boots and tugged at her skinny jeans to cover her ankles that were revealed by the shorter parts of the boot. If only she knew how she had gotten there and why she was dumped in the middle of the woods. snap. Kari felt her heart jump every time a branch snapped. The snapping continued for the next hour. Kari thought it was more than that. Being in the dark by yourself, time runs much slower. Eventually she heard something, she went pale. It was a scream, of a boy, maybe a man. It was long and loud, and sent shivers down her spine. She felt a tear run down her face. The snapping continued and so did the screams, the one screaming person was joined by many others, men, women and children. She decided to turn her head over and fall asleep. This is only a small part of it. This is the only part I have edited myself.
